The Star Wars logo

A fairly simple tutorial on how to achieve the well-known, yet simple technique of the logo of Star Wars. Simple perhaps, but also very handy for "padawans" in Photoshop. It's these techniques that teaches you more about blending-modes and how to apply them to objects or text.

Introduction
There are so many variations to the logo. From simple colors and outlines to animated 3d incoming metal. But the best out there so far is the one from the Lego Star Wars games and the celebration and of course the famous episode 3 posters.
I'm talking obviously... about the logo of Star Wars.
Throughout the years, the logo has seen MANY different styles all very different. And since giving a font just some color isn't much of a task, I'm gonna teach you how to do the coolest and second-easiest style.

Installing the font
Before you start, make sure you have the font ready. In this case, the font makes all the difference. It can be found at Dafont.com
Download the font, extract the .ttf-file and copy it to your Fonts-directory located at C:/Windows/Fonts/
For Macs, this is totally different; click and drag either the TrueType or PostScript fonts to the System Folder and reboot every application using a font.

Getting Started
When you have the font, simply type out the word STAR in capital letters and WARS in capital letters as well. Make sure that WARS is placed underneath STAR.
If the distance between the 2 words is too big, change the size. This is different for some versions.
For Photoshop CS3, simply click on the A|-button next to the layer-palette and change the leading to 3-10 pixels. (This is the 2nd dropdown menu from the 2nd row). For the older versions of Photoshop, simply open the Text-window by going to Window>Text and changing the leading to 3-10 pixels (the same spot as in CS3)

Then simply add these layer-styles. When you're gonna add the gradient, do this in the colors #FFC500 and #E77300. The stroke should be #FFCC00.

The final touch
Open a new layer, and with either the Pen-Tool or the Elliptical Marquee-Tool, create an oval shape through the logo. Once you have the selection open, simply press CTRL+SHIFT+I and fill the new selection with White. Then, all you need to do is press CTRL+SHIFT+G to mask it with the text underneath it. Then just lower the opacity or change the blending-mode to OVERLAY. Your choice!

As I said in the introduction, the logo can also be portrayed in metal or another different style. With the knowledge gathered in this tutorial, I'm sure you can post even cooler outcomes!
If you think you have, post your result in the comments!
