Christian the christian
He's a christian...
June 4, 2010
ChristiantheChristian

I thought of Christian when I was in a corny mood on a friday-afternoon. Since christian is a name and also the name for a person devoted to christ, I thought it was a hilarious play on words. Thus, Christian the christian was born. Being an atheist myself, I never pass up the oportunity to make fun of religion... but with all due respect ofcourse. Because you can make fun of everything, as long as it's funny and not just mean.
I have no idea if I'm gonna do more with him, although silly animated shorts do sound kind of like him. I also have an idea for a silly acapella themesong. :D

Invite Mirjam and Bonny
Birthday Party Casino
January 2010
MirjamBonny

My mother, who is a teacher, celebrated her birthday with her duo, which is the teacher that teaches the same class on days she doesn't work. Because they teach at an elementary school, they wanted to "theme" their party with the theme of Casino. For this party, I was tasked to create an invitation.
Because they held a casino and they were the "queens" of the evening, I drew them as a playing-card. The invite's were handed to the children in the shape and size of an actual playing-card in the 4 different colors and shapes. Some had the queen of hearts, others the queen of spades. The viral thing I wanted to add was that children would then begin to trade with one another if they wanted a different color.
This did happen and proved to help the party be remembered better. More people than ever showed up and commented on the nice invite.

This agility/puzzle game for Dutch broadcasting client RTL I helped make at MediaMonks. Together with the lead-artist, I was responsible for the overal style of the game, the recipies and the ingredients. Furthermore, I was also in charge of the design of the chef. For the game, we wanted a style different from the one we used. We finally chose a style inspired by the 50's and 60's Hanna Barbera cartoons. The game is a mixture between Tetris and the famous Pie-game where it's your task to prepare the ingredients in the right order, manage the time and make sure the dish turns out perfectly. It's a game that tests your skill in puzzles and agility. You'll start with easy dishes like omelets, but you'll eventually move on to pasta-dishes, soups and the crême brulée. The game is in Dutch, but it's pretty easy to understand due to its iconic look and feel.

Together with the lead-artist, I was responsible for the overal style of the game, the recipies and the ingredients. Furthermore, I was also in charge of the design of the chef. For the chef we wanted a stereotypical French chef. Ofcourse every cartoon-chef is chubby, has a hat AND.... a moustache. Really, you *can't* be a chef without a fancy-pansy moustache. Just as the entire game, the chef was designed in a 50's-Hanna-Barbera-styled look, complete with animation, which I sadly did not do. In the game, the chef is there to watch your every move, commenting on your actions throughout the game and also testing your homemade meals. Be carefull though, this man does not fool around. Behind that jolly exterious houses a true Gordon Ramsey-like chef who WILL get mad if you screw up.

Again, at work at MediaMonks, I worked on a game for the Nationale Postcode Loterij, which is the national lottery-society that helps and funds good causes and in this case, wants to attract more people to see musea. For this client, we created a very nifty puzzle-game where you have to rotate tiles and lead your player to through the museum to the museum-item. For this project, I was in charge of the design of the silly Host. It had to look like a friendly, but cheesy gameshowhost, and it had to change appearance whenever a new sponsor was issued. So far we've had 2 sections. One with a famous Dutch Palace and one with the museum of the late Dutch artist van Gogh.

This is probably the biggest professional project I've had the honor of working on. At my work at MediaMonks, we started working on a very hige project last year for the clients Nickelodeon (awesome) and Studio 100
(a Belgian tv-show producer). They wanted Mediamonks to game a webgame for their hit tv-show, Het Huis Anubis, which is kind of like a soap opera for children and teenagers. For the game, I worked with an incredibly large team on various things. I worked on enemies, items, pickups, leveldesign and I even designed the big badguy himself, Mofid. Ofcourse all, while working in a multidisciplinary team. I had loads of fun being part of this and it's just awesome hearing children talk about the game you helped build. I played it myself and I must say that the team did an amazing job :D The game has actually 2 parts with the 2nd being kind of like a standalone expansion with basically the same engine and grapphics, but added levels, items and sections. The first game focusses on the group of teens (from the series) trying to capture the mask of the evil wizard Mofid. In the second game, the group ventures deep into the tombs of Apep, an even greater danger!

Het Verloren Geheugen - Alfons September - December 2008
Het Verloren Geheugen

The game art for my first EMMA-project, Het Verloren Geheugen. This is Alfons, the protagonist. In the above square, you can see an earlier concept of Alfons, where the story was that Alfons was a ruthless bastard of a boss, but after a fall from his own office-window, he loses his memory and acts all nice.
In the last version of Alfons, I made his posture a bit more human so the target-audience (mostly non-gamers) could identify themselves more with him.

Het Verloren Geheugen - Menno September - December 2008
Het Verloren Geheugen

The game art for my first EMMA-project, Het Verloren Geheugen. This is Menno, the very first NPC you will meet in the game. I designed Menno to be a character with an interesting background. He may look like a big strong guy, but he's actually a very timid, shy, but nice guy. You encounter Menno in the game when you and him are trapped in the toilet and need to get out. Menno was designed to have 2 emotions: happy and worried.

Het Verloren Geheugen - Herman September - December 2008
Het Verloren Geheugen

The game art for my first EMMA-project, Het Verloren Geheugen. This is Herman, the chef at the lunchroom of the company the game takes place. Herman is actually modelled after one of our teachers, Karel Millenaar. I did that, just because it was hilarious. We all had a good laugh, so in the end it worked. Apart from it being a good joke, it was also my choice, because he's an interesting person to charicaturise.

Het Verloren Geheugen - Cindy September - December 2008
Het Verloren Geheugen

The game art for my first EMMA-project, Het Verloren Geheugen. This is Cindy, the secretary of the protagonist. She will help you regain your memory by setting you on the right track and is there for the occasional guidance. Cindy is designed to be the infamous officebimbo. But behind that shell lies a very kind person that is actually not like she might seem.

Het Verloren Geheugen - Various September - December 2008
Het Verloren Geheugen

The game art for my first EMMA-project, Het Verloren Geheugen. These are images from various characters and objects. From left to right you can see Mehmet the janitor, Marc and Julian. At the bottom is a rejected model of Barry the sleeping hobo.

Het Verloren Geheugen - Frank Bikkel September - December 2008
Het Verloren Geheugen

The game art for my first EMMA-project, Het Verloren Geheugen. These are actually 2 persons, because when I designed the left character, Frank Bikkel (a famous detective and ladykiller), the target-audience felt him looking too much like a mobster. We gave the story a twist and turned him ito Dick Griffel, a dandy reporter. I did this minor change because the target-audience did feel a certain connection with the face of the character.
We eventually rejected this concept, because the story didn't make any sense. It's a shame Dick.. or Frank never made it into the final.

MickM About-Art 13 May 2008
Mick v10 About-art

I needed a new drawing for my About-page, so this was it. I later changed the drawing a little to match my new hair. I also turned this drawing into Flash to animate it. The final product can be found the About-page.

Christmas Card 2007 24 December 2007
Christmas Card

Everyone likes toys. Especially around christmas. Why not portray Santa as an action-figure? EVERYONE would buy it!

A drawing of Manny Calavera for a poster I made for my door. Manny Calavera is the protagonist of my favorite videogame, Grim Fandango.

Conceptual drawings of a cheesy gameshow host for a game for my job at MediaMonks. Sadly we didn't win the pitch and the idea for the game got rejected.

Just a random doodle I made from a fancy girl with a HUGE RPG.

Goku GT 17 July 2007
Goku

I made this drawing for my DragonballZ and GT DVD's to decorate the cover of the DVD's.

Malachite 20 June 2007
Malachite

A drawn impersonation of the character I played in the superhero-movie I played in with 3 friends/classmates.

A little too much? 18 April 2007
Buff

Another silly doodle I made of myself. It's nothing more than an extreme exageration of how I look. Kinda like a charicature.

El Diablo 7 February 2007
El Diablo

Being an atheist, I don't share any of the beliefs around Satan, but since it's such an intruiging character, I thought he needed a restyle. With this Mexican Don Juan-look he will be sure you seduce you before he will reap you! MUHAHAHAHA... right..

Cygnus 2 February 2007
Cygnus

Cygnus, a gameconcept I wrote together with friend and classmate Jeroen Stout, was never finished. We still hope to finish it whenever we have the time for this. This game would be an inspiration of Grim Fandango, Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil.
In the game you play Cygnus, a autistic secret-agent with a dangerous A.I.-partner.

Christmas Card 2006 24 December 2006
Christmas Card

2006's Christmas card featured a very cool person: The Fonz! With this card I wanted to with people HAPPY DAYS that christmas! :D

Forest Elf 22 November 2006
Forest Elf

For our class of Animation, we had to come up with a character and animate it later on in the class. Before we did this, we had to draw the character and think of a backstory. I came up with this elf who dresses semi-fancy and lives in a forest where you grow a tail if you enter in it. Riiight... yeah I was on crack during that time :P

GAH-ROOOOOVEY! 12 November 2006
EarthWorm Jim

A quick doodle I made from one of my favorite cartoon-heroes, EarthWorm Jim, or as we in Holland call him, Superworm Jim. He's such a silly, yet awesome character and KUDOS to Doug TenNapel for designing him.

"Hello Gotham... Joker's back!" 10 October 2006
Joker

I still think The Joker of the Batman Animated Series is the best of them all. That's why I drew one up that got featured on the cover of PSDMAG as well. I also made a few posters out of it!

Chimp Vader 20 August 2006
Chimp Vader

What if Darth Vader would be a monkey? Well that would be weird, shown in this drawing shown above...

Obi Wan(ts his money) 1 August 2006
Obi-Wan

After watching Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith for the thousandth time, I thought about what Obi-Wan would do after he would speak to Qui-Gon on Tatooine. I think this is how it transpired.

Gohan's MaSINGko 6 April 2006
Gohan

A little inside joke I drew up after watching DragonBallZ. There is a certain attack from the character Gohan called Masenko. I just thought it would be fun to pose him with a microphone and call it the Masingko, since he's such a showoff when being a "superhero". NOTE: That is not the sun, it's a fireball!

Audi R8 7 August 2005
Audi R8

Just a very basic vectorised car. I'm not a car person, but I always wanted to try vectorising a car. I did the Audi R8, because the model of it was quite challenging!
